SEJONG CULTURAL CENTER
A City Embracing Culture, Envisioning the Future
The proposal responds to the city's rich cultural heritage and its ambitions as an administrative capital. Drawing from the region's layered history as a center of governance and knowledge, the design seeks to create a landmark that bridges tradition with contemporary civic life — a place that fosters learning, exchange, and community gathering.
The design reinterprets traditional curvilinear forms found in Korean architecture as a contemporary spatial language. Three conceptual drivers guide the design: curve, flow, and expansion — representing past, present, and future respectively.
Inspired by the region's rich cultural legacy, our proposal seeks to create a new chapter — one that links the present and future through the playful reinterpretation of traditional heritage and its deep connection to knowledge and civic life.
About the Project
The gentle curving lines associated with traditional Korean architectural philosophy inspired both the overall massing of our proposal, as well as a conceptual narrative with respect to the passage and continuity of time; from the historic archetypes of the past (curve), to the organic spatial experience of the present (flow) to the intellectual promise of the future (expansion).
About the Project
These conceptual drivers — curve, flow and expansion — manifest through the provision of spatially rich and layered spaces, while also promising to create both a landmark and a new type of library that connects past knowledge with future thought. Lastly, our proposal conceives a library, not as a static reservoir of culture, but rather as conduit of knowledge that continues to expand and adapt to change.
